Business English

This class examines spoken and written language skills that will help you to succeed in the business world-both on the job placement tests and in the office.  This class also includes a vocabulary enrichment component to help you build vocabulary and improve spelling.

Communciations

This class covers the skills used in the creation of short business letters with an emphasis on style, organization, and proofreading.  It also covers intensive vocabulary building and common spelling problems that often puzzle the average English writer.  (Keboarding skills strongly recommended).

English Composition

This course emphasizes paragraph creation and essay writing, while improving student skills in grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Written assignments will be based on various required readings.

Literature A 

This course is designed to improving the student's comprehensive reading skills through short stories and poetry.  Students will read selections from American writers.  Students will have an opportunity to improve their verbal and writing skills through class discussions, and writing about the reading selections.

Literature B

This course is designed to improve comprehensive reading skills through novels and plays.  Students will read selections from classics and contemporary  writers.  Students will have an opportunity to imporve their verbal and writing skills as well through acting, class discussions, and writing about the reading selections.

Registration for Science is through the counselor and the high school entrance process.

Social Studies

U.S. History 1

This class will cover United States history from 1900 to 1939. Students will studty the industrialization of our economy, our involvement in World War I, and the causes and problems of the Great Depression.

U.S. History 2

This class will cover United States history from 1940 to the present.   Students will study our involvement in World War II, the Cold War era, various Civil Rights issues and the important social, political and technolgical issues of modern America.

U.S. Government

This class covers our attempts at self government from colonial times to the present.  Students will study the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution and Amendments, and the interaction of the three branches of government at the Federal, State and local levels.

Economics

This class is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of macro-and micro-economic concepts in a capitalist economy.   Students will learn the various interworkings of our economy and their impact on each other.  A brief introduction to world trade and other economic systems is included.

World History I

The focus of this course is on prehistroic man, Ice age to Renaissance, archelology, the rise and fall of ancient civilizations.  Students will also learn aobut he development of religions, differences in human cultures and political systems, the blackplague, time lines, georgraphy, and map reading. 

Students must see the counselor in order to enroll in this course.  For Adult Students only.

World History 2

Renaissance to the end of the Twentieth Century.  Students will study the age of exploration, colonialism, the industrial revolution, the rise of democracy, imperialism, landmark human events in Eurpoe, Asia , Aftrica, and India.  Also covered are World War I and II, the post war world, the space age, the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the effects of terrorism.

Students must see the counselor in order to enroll in this course.  For Adulst Students only.

Mathematics

Business Mathematics

This course emphasizes math skills that could be covered in a variety of job placement tests.  Students will receive instruction, review and practice in the use of manual calculators used to perform calcualtions with whole numbers, common fractions, decimals and percents.

Fine Arts I

Basic art techniques and terminology.  Students will learn the use of color, line, contrast, texture, shading and lighting.  Materials include paper, felt tips pens, pencil, watercolor, glue, disposable cameras and other household items.  No previous art experience required.

Students must see the counselor in order to enroll in this course.  For adult students only.

Fine Arts 2

Art history.  The focus of this course is Pre-Renaissance to the Post-Modern Era.  Students will learn about European artists, advancements in materials and techniques, the role of the Roman Catholic Church, the Guild system and Post Modern contemporary artists.  Students will also learn about artists and their works, some of whom are:  Leonardo de Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Picasso.

Students must see the counselor in order to enroll in this course.  For adult students only.

GED/GED Prep

Students study the writing, reading and math skills needed to pass the G.E.D. test.   See information under the G.E.D. for details.

Pre GED II - Writing Skills

Writing instruction in preparation for high school diploma English classes, required tests, and intermediate skills development.  The course will focus on writing sentences, paragraphs and compositons.  Students will produce writing of description, narration, instruction and persuasion as well as journalizing and daily practice in grammar and spelling.

Pre G.E.D. II - Reading Comprehension

Reading instruction in preparation for high school diploma English classes, required tests and intermediate skills development.  The course will focus on reading comprehension strategies including predictions, questioning, prior knowledge, summarization, synthesis, structural patterns of text, main idea and supporting details, tone, theme, plot and analysis.

Pre G.E.D. II - Transition 3 - Reading And Writing

English reading and writing in preparation for high school diploma English classes, required tests, and intermediate skills development.  The course will integrate reading, critical thinking and writing.  Materials will include reading across the genres and critical thinking and writing.  Regular response writing and grammar practice will aslo be included.

CAHSEE Prep - Math

This class is designed to improve students'  test taking abilities in mathematics and to learn success strategies that can be applied to any number of tests.  Standards-based.  Class may be taken once for math credit and repeated for elective credit.
