The Hayward Unified School District is closely monitoring continuous information being shared about the novel coronavirus by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and agencies within Alameda County. At this time, the health risk to the general public in California from novel coronavirus remains low, but HUSD is making it a priority to keep the community informed and we are proactively reviewing existing emergency plans in the event of a confirmed case.

The 2019 novel coronavirus is a virus that was recently identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and causes respiratory illness. It is now being spread widely in other parts of mainland China and more cases are being detected worldwide. For up-to-date information regarding the novel coronavirus, see:

What families can do:

  • Students should stay home when they are ill. They should remain at home until fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicines and seek immediate medical care if symptoms become more severe (e.g., high fever or difficulty breathing)

  • Wash hands frequently

  • Use “respiratory etiquette” and cover a cough with a tissue or sleeve

It is important to remember that handling the spread of a serious contagion like the coronavirus is primarily a task for public health agencies. We are working closely with our local agencies to provide you with current information and provide our staff with guidance on prevention and preparedness. We appreciate your cooperation and support!
